Sunny Prospects - New Generation Technology and Automation Trends in the Photovoltaic Industry

After years of consolidation and stagnation, the global photovoltaic industry has returned to growth. The future business outlook is promising as levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) is trending towards being the cheapest in comparison to conventional sources of energy such as nuclear and coal.

Meanwhile, the industry has adopted new technologies such as PERC (Passivated Emitter and Rear Contact) and is also tackling the implementation of n-type base doped wafers and the respective solar cell and module technologies achieving conversion efficiencies of >23%. A main cost-down driver is the successful use of wafers thinner than 150 µm as cut.

The presentation will cover aspects of new solar cell technologies and their consequences on factory automation as well as the use of Industry4.0 elements in the solar industry.

  • Gunter Erfurt holds a Diploma in Physical Engineering from the West Saxon University of Applied Sciences in Zwickau (DE) and his doctorate in Physics from the Freiberg University of Mining and Technology.
  • Erfurt has extensive international experience in project and senior management positions in globally active photovoltaic companies. For SolarWorld AG in Freiberg (DE), he has driven the development of the R & D center and managed the ramp-up of manufacturing locations in the USA. During his career he has acquired in-depth knowledge of solar cell technology and the industrialization of PV manufacturing processes and will be able to place a strong focus on the business development of Meyer Burger’s future oriented cell technologies.
  • Since 1 November 2015 he has held the position of the CEO of Meyer Burger (Germany) AG.
  • In this function he is responsable for the Business Units Photovoltaik and Specialized Technologies.
